WOOD-RIDGE, NJ — Wood-Ridge High School senior Maya Cruz was selected as the school’s nominee for the Unsung Hero Award, sponsored by the Bergen County School Boards Association. She was honored during the March BOE meeting.
The Unsung Hero Award recognizes graduating seniors who quietly and consistently demonstrate strength of character, resilience, and a positive impact on their school community. These students may not always seek the spotlight, but their perseverance, kindness, and determination make a meaningful difference in the lives of those around them. According to BOE trustee Rich Fallon, there was a nominee from every school district and high school in Bergen County this year. The county-wide ceremony was held in early March.
Superintendent Anthony Albro explained that the program was established after COVID-19 “with the purpose of recognizing people who overcome obstacles and continue to do what they have to do every day. This year's one is someone who is absolutely incredible.”
Albro explained that Cruz had moved to New Jersey from across the country, and lost her mother shortly into that year. She was a peer tutor to other students, helped her sister and her family.
“Every day with a smile on her face, that's our unsung hero,” he said, and read a resolution honoring her.
